A mechanical keyboard uses individual switches for each key, which improve the typing experience dramatically over cheaper membrane keyboards, because of the consistent feedback that doesn't change over time due to the quality of the individual key switches. Mechanical key switches are available in a range of different ‘feels’ based on tactile feedback and operating force required to register a key-stroke.
