My optical drive (DVD, CDRW, Etc.) won't read or write media or is no longer visible in my computer but is shown in device manager.

The usual fix for this issue is easily performed using Microsoft’s CD/DVD troubleshooting wizard found on their knowledge base here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060.
