It's not something that you have to do, you could fit a single stick of 1GB and another stick of 2GB the only difference in performance you would have is the memory would run in dual channel mode, however given modern memory speeds the decrease in performance is probably negligible. If you're fitting memory of different speeds the memory will only run as fast as the slowest speed fitted.
