Music production PC buying guide

There’s a lot to think about when you’re buying a PC for music production.

What components are best? Do you need a powerful graphics card? How much do you need to spend to get a system that’ll happily process renders, bounces and other essential editing tasks?

Those are just a few of the questions that are likely to crop up when you’re shopping for a music PC.

But, the CCL team is here to help! We’ve created a complete buying guide which answers these questions and more.

Keep reading and prepare to buy your dream music editing PC!

What is a music production PC?

A music production PC is a PC which has been designed and built with music production specifically in mind.

So, it’ll have a sufficient specification to handle the most demanding DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) music editing programs such as FL Studio, Ableton, Cubase and others.

This means that good-quality music production PCs feature multi-core CPUs with hyperthreading, DDR4 RAM, very large amounts of storage via HDD and/or SSD drives, full-size ATX motherboards and failsafe PSUs.

Can you use a music production PC for gaming?

If you’re anything like Deadmau5 or other music producers, you probably enjoy a bit of gaming after you're done with producing your latest masterpiece.

Were you nodding along to that sentence? If you answered yes, then you’ll want to know if music production PCs are good for gaming.

The answer is yes.

Certainly all of the music production PCs here at CCL will be excellent for gaming. 1080p, 1440p and even 4K gaming are all within reach on our music PCs.

Just bear in mind that, whilst many DAW music editing programs don’t really require a powerful graphics card, most games do.

So, if you’re going to be gaming and producing music on your music editing PC, make sure you buy one with a good-quality graphics card.

At CCL we have music production PCs with NVIDIA RTX 30 series and AMD Radeon RX series graphics cards - so they’ll easily handle intensive gaming and music editing.

What components should a music production PC have?

This is a question that trips many people up when they’re shopping for a music PC.

Different DAW programs have different requirements so it can be difficult to spell exactly what components you’ll need in your system.

However, there are some general things to look for that will help you select a music editing PC with the right specification.

Let’s take a look.

CPU

If you’re going to be spending time focusing on one component for your music production PC, it should be the processor.

It’s the CPU that’ll do most of the heavy lifting during music production, so you’ll want to buy a system that has a multi-core CPU with hyperthreading ability.

This means you need to look for systems that feature Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processors. CPUs such as the Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 5 have excellent multi-core and hyperthreading performance.

As you can imagine, the exact level of performance that you require from your CPU will depend on the type of music production you’re doing. Relatively simple projects such as recording and editing podcasts will be fine with a 6-core CPU.

Complex projects with multiple arrangements can require 8-core or higher CPUs.

At CCL our music production PCs feature as a minimum Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 CPUs.

However, if you’re looking for a really high-end music production PC, then we have systems with top-end Core i9 and Ryzen 9 CPUs.

Graphics card

Given that the graphics card market remains somewhat unstable, you’ll be glad to know that music production PCs don’t require high-end GPUs.

That’s because most DAW music production programs don’t really utilise the graphics card.

So, if you’re just going to be using your system for music production, you can get away with using a card such as an NVIDIA GTX 1660.

But, if you’re going to be using your PC for gaming as well as music editing, then that changes things. You’ll want to buy a system with as good a GPU as you can afford.

At CCL all of our music production PCs come with high-end graphics cards, beginning with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050, all the way up to the RTX 3090. We also have music PCs with AMD Radeon graphics cards, from the RX 6600 all the way up to the RX 6900 XT.

RAM

Ensuring you have sufficient RAM in your PC is crucial to enjoying a smooth music editing experience.

For music production in general, 16GB of DDR4 RAM will be enough to guarantee this.

If you’re going to be gaming on your system as well, 16GB of RAM will be sufficient for that too.

The only exception is if you’re going to be multitasking regularly on process-heavy programs. In that instance, you’ll benefit from 32GB of RAM or more.

At CCL our music production PCs have a minimum of 16GB of RAM, with higher end systems coming with 32GB and even 64GB of RAM.

Storage

Editing music can quickly generate lots of large files which need to be stored on your system.

So, it’s important that you buy a system which has enough storage for all of your editing workload.

In terms of what type of storage you should look for, we would recommend looking for systems that have both HDD and SSD drives.

Why?

Because it’s important that you have a form of storage that can read and write data quickly (think about it - you can have the most powerful system in the world - but if the CPU cannot read the data from the storage fast enough, that performance goes to waste).

The solution is to use an SSD (Solid State Drive) to store your music files whilst you are actively editing them. SSDs offer excellent read and write rates, so they are ideal for this task.

Once you are done editing, you can then store your music files on a HDD (Hard Disk Drive), which, whilst slower than an SSD, will generally have more storage space at a lower cost.

Here at CCL you’ll find music editing PCs with either SSD drives alone, or systems with both SSD and HDD drives. Our systems can also be customised so that you can include the storage options of your choice.

Motherboard

Are you going to be plugging lots of things into your PC? Whether it’s audio interfaces, decks or other controllers, music production PCs require lots of inputs.

As such, it’s generally recommended that you buy a system which has a motherboard with plenty of input options.

When looking at systems, check the ‘Front Panel I/O Ports’ and ‘Rear Panel I/O Ports’ in the technical specifications. These sections will tell you what types of inputs (and how many) your desired PC has.

Whilst every component in a music production PC plays an important role in the overall function of the system, the five components above are especially important. Get those right, and you’ll end up with a music PC with brilliant performance.

How much does a music production PC cost?

The all important question!

What you spend on a music editing PC is largely determined by what you want to do with it.

If you just want a PC for some basic audio editing work as well as some gaming, then you can pick one up from just under £800.

On the other hand, if you want to go all out and create the ultimate system for the most complex, intensive music editing projects (as well as AAA gaming at high resolutions and frame rates), then the sky's the limit in terms of price.

At CCL we offer music production PCs ranging from just under £800 all the way up to £5,500.

Can I build my own music production PC?

We understand that musicians can have very particular requirements for their systems. As such, we make it easy to create the custom music editing PC of your dreams here at CCL.

If you want to create a custom music PC at CCL, you have two options:

  • Use our custom PC building service. You can hand pick every single component in your new system and our master PC builders will put it together for you.
  • Customise one of our current music production PCs.

Should you only want to hand pick one or two components in a system, then the second route is generally easier.

All you need to do is click on the PC that you want and then click on the ‘Customise this PC’ tab in the product description section.

You’ll be presented with a list of customisation options. In many cases you’ll be able to pick from two or more components for each customisation.

The cost of these upgrades are all clearly labelled, so you’ll know what the final bill will be before you hit the buy button.

What accessories do I need for a music production PC?

Buying a great system is only part of the journey towards creating the ultimate home music production setup.

There are several accessories that can come in handy, which we’ve detailed below.

PCIe sound card

Although today’s motherboards are able to handle audio excellently, it can pay to invest in a dedicated PCIe sound card for your music PC.

That’s especially true if you’re going to be using your PC to drive high impedance headphones or speakers.

Brands such as ASUS and Creative Sound Blaster make excellent quality and value PCIe sound cards.

External DAC

A DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) takes digital audio and converts it into an analog signal. It’s used to reduce the amount of ‘noise’ from the electrical currents in your computer that can cause interference in your music production.

Essentially, a DAC can reduce the ‘hiss’ or ‘static’ that many people experience when listening to music that has been produced on a PC.

Brands such as Creative Sound Blaster make affordable, high-quality DACs that also act as an external sound card.

USB audio interfaces

Do you want to plug an instrument or audio workstation directly into your PC for recording purposes? Then you’re going to need a USB audio interface.

Put simply, USB audio interfaces take the audio inputs from your instrument or music workstation and transfer them into your PC in a form it can understand - by transforming your analog audio signals into digital signals.

Microphones

Whilst many beginner music producers will be satisfied using a standard USB microphone, more serious producers may want to upgrade to XLR mics which offer professional studio-level quality.

These types of mics will require an audio interface (as just described above), in order to properly interface with your PC.

Popular XLR mic brands include Shure, Rode, Neumann and Sennheiser.

What software do I need for a music production PC?

The first thing you’ll want to do once you’ve purchased your music production PC is to download your music production program of choice.

If you’re new to the world of music editing then you’ll want to do your research first. Some programs are designed specifically for beginners and feature easy to understand and use interfaces.

Other music production programs are geared more for professional users and can take quite a lot of getting used to.

Popular music production programs include:

  • FL Studio.
  • Traktor.
  • Cubase.
  • Magix Acid Pro.
  • Ableton.
  • PreSonus Studio One.

Where to buy a music production PC

So you’ve decided to go for it and buy a music production PC.

The next step then, is to decide where to buy one.

Remember, you don’t just want to buy a great PC at a great price. It’s important that you get plenty of back up, support and a great warranty with it too.

And, that’s just what CCL offers with every single one of our music production PCs!

Keep reading to see what we mean…

3-year collect and return warranty

When you invest your hard earned money into a PC, you want to know that you’ve got support if something goes wrong.

When you buy a music editing PC from CCL, you truly do have support - 3 years of it in fact.

For 3 years - if anything goes wrong with your PC -  we will cover the cost of sending your system to our Bradford workshop, the cost of any labour or components required to get it working again, and the cost of returning it to you.

For 3 years!

That’s one of the best warranties in the UK PC-building industry.

Extensive testing

With over 30 years’ experience building high-performance, balanced and reliable PCs, we know how important presale testing is.

Before any of our PCs leave our workshop they are subjected to a battery of intensive tests where they are subjected to different loads and stresses.

Our PCs also go through an extensive quality assurance process, where our PC builders closely scrutinise every part and surface to ensure each PC is perfect.

It’s only once it has completed these tests and inspections that your PC will be sent to you.

Next day music production PCs

We know that as soon as you hit the ‘buy’ button, you’ll be super eager to receive your new PC and start working on your next musical masterpiece.

That’s why we work with the UK’s best courier companies to ensure that your PC will reach you quickly and safely.

When we have your music editing PC in stock, we will aim to deliver it to you the next working day.

If you have selected a modified or completely custom PC, we will aim to deliver it to you within 4 to 5 working days.

Access to ongoing advice and support

Whether you have some questions about setting up your new PC, or you want to talk to someone about any upgrade further down the line, the CCL team is always here to answer your questions.

Everyone who buys a CCL PC has access to ongoing tech advice and support via a low-cost telephone line or free email service.
