Netflix Makes Deal with DreamWorks to Produce Over 300 Hours of Original Content

Could the future of internet film & TV be in original content, not re-runs?

One of the two big streaming heavyweights Netflix has announced it has made a massive deal with DreamWorks to bring an enormous 300+ hours of original content to its customers. The exact nature of the content is unknown at the moment but it could end up being a brand new series featuring some of DreamWorks’ most recognisable characters. While details have remained scarce on the exact nature of the deal, Wall Street has jumped on the news with Netflix shares rising by 8% in light of the announcement.

Even though original content can prove to be extremely costly, Netflix might just be set to differentiate itself from its competition and gain a torrent of new subscribers, helping to mitigate the costs of creating this new original series. Its competitors will have to either start investing in original content or focus on getting older content going at reduced prices in larger volumes.

There are already UK exclusive shows on both Netflix (Hemlock Grove) and their competitor Lovefilm (The Vikings). These have proven hugely popular with UK audiences regularly getting to the top of the streaming services charts which must surely have made the decision to work on content with DreamWorks that little bit easier.

One thing is for sure, media streaming services are going from strength to strength in the US and UK.
