Desktop Drives vs. WD Red™ Plus

Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

  • Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these drives are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance.
  • Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one, and desktop drives aren’t typically designed and tested under those conditions like WD Red™ Plus drives are.
  • Error Recovery Controls:  WD Red™ Plus NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system.
  • Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red™ Plus drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

1 Workload Rate is defined as the amount of user data transferred to or from the hard drive. Workload Rate is annualized (TB transferred ? (8760 / recorded power-on hours)). Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.

Do you have you a question about the Western Digital Red Plus 2TB Hard Drive?

Q: I was under the impression that Western Digital will not cover the warranty on O E M drives
Answer by Website User on 23rd February 2015
My understanding is the WD should take these drives back for a warranty repair directly, but we are able to handle this process on drives bought from us if required. -Danlevan

Q: As these drives are suppose be to more reliable. Can I uses them like a normal hard drive just to store data, not in a NAS set up.
Answer by CCL on 22nd October 2013
They are generally designed for NAS, although they can be used as a normal HDD, but it is not recommended as the Green drives usually offer better value for money and similar levels of reliability. The Red drives would only be worthwhile if the drives were accessed 24/7. -* RH

Q: Do these WD 2TB Red drives you sell have 2-Platters or 3-Platters ? WD have the SAME product codes two different drives types :( (2 Platter drives weight 599g and 3 Platter drives weight 640g and performance & noise differences are very noticeable as is reliability between the two). Thanks for looking into this.
Answer by CCL on 18th June 2013
Unfortunately we don't have any confirmation on how many platters the drives we carry have, nor would we be able to tell for certain what future stock would have. -Danlevan

That's unfortunate - I was about to order 4 of these, but will have to see if I can find a supplier who can verify which type of drives I'll be getting.

Answer by Website User on 8th September 2014
That question was answered over 12 months ago, the only drives available from authorised WD distributors for CCL to buy in to sell are the newer generation (revised again) - TL

Q: How are your internal HDD packaged & shipped ?
Answer by CCL on 18th June 2013
All our Hard Drives are shipped in a larger cardboard box, with protective foam above and below. The foam covers the whole hard drive, thus none of the Drive should be touching the box itself. - RH

Yes, these drives would be fine in that server. Other drives that would work well are the Western Digital or Seagate Green drives. -Danlevan

Q: Hi, I just wanted an opinion on how well 2 of these would work in a windows server 2011 setup, running as raid 1 next to 2 X wd green 2tb also in raid 1?
Answer by CCL on 8th February 2013
These should work just fine, however as these drives are designed specifically for use in a NAS enclosure I'd probably stick with another two greens instead as the performance will be the same. -Danlevan

Q: Hi. I have a ReadyNAS Duo RND2000. Neither the box nor the invoice mentions V2, though the label on the bottom of the device says it is a ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 V2. The serial number is 24M3987100BBF. It was purchased on 28/9/2009. Would you happen to know if Netgear supports the use of two Western Digital Caviar Red 2TB Hard Drive WD20EFRX in my ReadyNAS device please? Many thanks. Ross Fletcher.
Answer by CCL on 14th January 2013
I could not find a drive compatibility list, but your NAS can support up to 6TB (2x3TB) and these drives are designed for NAS and should be fine. Regards, Mike

To replace a 6 year old one that had died on the server. Straight swap out perfect. Just a bit of re-configuring of whs v2 to get the software (ms built in) raid operational.

Archie Paton

Bought 2 of them for a nas drive and they are working superbly.

As with all the WD products I have had dealings with I had no problems installing and setting-up; using in a single disk NAS setup. Would recommend to friends and the wider community.
