Starfield: Best PC Specifications and Minimum Requirements

Starfield is the latest title from Bethesda Game Studios, who you might know from a little title called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; or if post-apocalyptic wastelands are more your speed - Fallout 4. Apparently not satisfied with their reputation for building vast and in-depth worlds, this time around Bethesda are trying their hand at a vast, in-depth Galaxy.

An action-roleplaying game built to be a living universe complete with opportunities to interfere (help) with the day-to-day tribulations of the common-folk of whatever planet you're on, Starfield offers exploration on a massive scale, customisable modular space-ships, crew recruitment and more - and was reportedly in development for over 7 years, so while the game looks demanding, it should be pretty well optimised by now.

Starfield is a massive, ambitious game that promises to take players on an epic adventure of galaxy-wide mystery, adventure and discovery - but luckily, looking at the minimum requirements you quite won't need a massive, ambitious galaxy-powered PC to run it.

Starfield Minimum PC Requirements

As you can see, if your rig was a solid mid-range-upwards gaming PC anytime in the last 5-years, you're probably going to be able to play Starfield, even if it's not on very high settings. SSD required shouldn't shock anyone, as if you've managed to get to 2023 and your gaming PC doesn't have an SSD in it yet, I commend you on your stubbornness.

  • OS: Windows 10 version 22H2 (10.0.19045)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel Core i7-6800K
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700, NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 125 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: SSD Required

While the spec doesn't look that daunting at first-glance, it's worth taking note that both the AMD Radeon RX 5700 and NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti were released with 8GB of VRAM, so while they may be 4-5 years old they're not slouches when it comes to slinging textures. With that in mind, if you're shopping for a new PC I wouldn't recommend going lower than an RTX 3060 to keep parity with an 8GB minimum.

Starfield Recommended PC Requirements

The recommended PC specifications for Starfield go up a notch, but are by no means a leap from the minimum, with GPUs coming forward a generation and up a tier, with a similar step-up in processor power. No change to the memory requirement which is refreshing, given we've seen some titles pushing this up recently.

  • OS: Windows 10/11 with updates
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, Intel i5-10600K
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 125 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: SSD Required

With the RTX 2080 laid out on the table as the card to match, if you're shopping for a new PC for Starfield I'd aim for a system with an RTX 4060 Ti upwards - you'd also be fine with an RTX 3060 Ti if you can get a good enough deal on one, but given the level of price parity between the two cards, I'd plump for the 40-series for a little extra performance and future-proofing.

Taking it up a notch

If you want to play on the highest settings, going up the gears through 1440p and 4K however, you'll want to look further and consider GPU the level of a 4070 Ti up to a 4090 depending on the length and breadth of your wallet and demands - Starfield will have full mod support, so whenever the inevitable texture mods are released you'll need a bit of power-buffer to make sure you can handle them, if that's your thing.
