HGST (formerly known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) is these days a wholly-owned subsidiary of Western Digital. The HGST brand was initially brought about by the merger of IBM and Hitachi’s individual hard disk drive businesses.

Nevertheless HGST retains its identity and reputation for product quality and reliability. Throughout its history HGST has continually innovated when it comes to storage technology.

For example, the mid-2010s saw HGST introduce a 6TB capacity drive filled with helium (to ensure the hard drive remained cool, was lighter and consumed less power during operation). 2014 saw further innovation with the introduction of a 10TB helium drive which used shingled magnetic recording to improve density.

So, if you want a high-quality, reliable hard drive it has to be a HGST hard drive.
