Q: Seems impossible to fit a full size DVD player, although it has a bay for one. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you mean you have purchased this case and cannot install one? If so, what is blocking the drive from being installed? We use this case in our Alpha AMD Home systems and have no issues installing a 5.25" DVD Drive.

A basic standard case internally and the power supply, although 500w, is not great on the 12v rail overall. However, it is working fine for my needs, no gaming just internet and office. I would buy again for a simple home office build.
