4K HDTV is already pegged to be the next revolution in HDTV entertainment and while its not exactly down to an everyday consumer level just yet, the technology is slowly establishing a foothold in the market. With companies like Sony already selling 4K capable projectors and 4K resolution TV's and monitors creeping into the market, albeit at an alarmingly high price tag.
Most modern graphics cards and integrated graphics solutions can already support 4K resolutions in one way or another but not all these solutions or even modern motherboards can physically output the resolutions since they lack a connection that can meet the significant bandwidth requirements.
Gigabyte are a well known hardware manufacturer and they've proven their worth this week as the demonstrated how one of its mainboards can output a signal of 4K resolutions by using a pair of independent Thunderbolt ports. It's not uncommon for the new 4K displays to use multiple inputs to transfer the huge amounts of date from a graphics card/processor, but the TH models from Gigabyte can output 10Gb/s data and one DisplayPort 1.1 stream per port. DisplayPort1.1 supports a native 2K resolution, so obviously put two together with a bit of technical magic and you have 4K.
The current HDTV standard is 1920 x 1080 pixels but when your churning our 3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160 your really going to need to ramp up those data transfer rates to the display, which is where Thunderbolt and display port lend their talents.
Gigabyte ran their test using the stunning Eizo FDH3601 4096 x2160 monitor, a screen typically used for things like air traffic control, Gigabyte GA-Z77MX-D3H TH motherboard, Intel Core i7 3770K / HD4000 graphics, Windows 8 and 2 mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapters.
It may not sound much to some, but once you see a 4K display in motion 1920 x 1080p will just never look the same again.
