It's best not to wonder where this world would be without apps, because we wouldn't be able to read a map, or add up, or fire tiny little birds at tiny little pigs without them. And while apps have been the killer edge for Apple with the iPhone, iPad and Lil' iPad, Microsoft reports that the recent launch of Windows 8 has also seen a flurry of major brands make their mark on the system with apps.

"Major global brands, including Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, Johnson & Johnson Services Inc., Rooms To Go Inc., Bank of America Corp. and PCL Constructors Inc., are among the early adopters deploying Windows 8-based apps to address their business needs and engage consumers in new ways," said a Microsoft statement.

And Windows Commercial Marketing senior director Erwin Visser said the business applications of the new Windows platform could change the way businesses interact with their customers, as well as opening up a whole world of possibilities for how Windows 8 adopters can use their computers.

"It's so great to see a number of the world's most well-known companies choosing Windows 8 to advance their businesses," said Mr Vesser. "Windows 8 opens new doors for businesses to improve the way they collaborate and share information, enhance customer experiences, uncover new business opportunities, and much more."

As Microsoft confirms, a number of new apps have been quickly pushed to the Windows 8 platform, including Twentieth Century Fox's FoxFast. The platform allows users to watch TV online, with a vast library of programs offered by Fox and numerous other partners.

Johnson & Johnson have also released a 'Digital Health Scorecard' for those who just can't stop Googling their symptoms, while the Bank of America has also launched an app through the Windows Store that allows customers easier access to their finance.
