Simulator games have been doing the rounds for years, with players first trying their hand at town planning in Sim City, piloting planes in Microsoft Flight Simulator and even undergoing the trials and tribulations of the supply chain in UK Truck Simulator.

While these are all common and perhaps even desirable jobs, apparently developer Astragon believes there is enough people intrigued by the ebb and flow of putting out fires in their local air transport hub that they could release Airport Firefighter Simulator.

Planes are, without a doubt, highly flammable beasts, with all the aviation fuel required to keep a huge hunk of metal slicing through the sky at 500mph with 33,000 feet beneath it. Yet, the notion of having to play a game dedicated to the simulated threat of aeroplane fires and then subsequently giving them a virtual hose down, does not sound like Bafta-winning video game gold.

Airport Firefighter Simulator publisher Excalibur are also behind other simulator hits, such as waterway navigation sim River Master, caravan park administration title Camping Manager and excavation mine-a-thon Stone Quarry Simulator.

However, as far as industry niches go, restricting gamers to only putting out fires within the constraints of an airport is an all-new level of weird. Especially considering the only aerodrome fires most people have witnessed are on the silver screen, with Bruce Willis slaughtering terrorists in Die Hard 2: Die Harder and with Lesley Nielsen getting frustrated at people calling him Shirley in Airplane.

If everyday heroism in video game form is your thing, then Airport Firefighter Simulator may be the title for you, giving you the opportunity to bring an end to one of greatest bones of contention with modern air travel.

Challenges include refuelling and understanding the impacts of cargo on any given inferno, you never know when a small fire could become the next Hindenburg. You will be required to carry out day and night shifts, covering 20 square kilometres of fires in what will no doubt the airport with the worst safety record in the world.

Airport Firefighter Simulator is available for £24.99.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801478100-ADNFCR
