Pre-orders for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), the next generation version of the classic first person shooter, are up today ahead of its release date later this month.

Its worldwide release date is August 21st and it will be available for $14.99 in the US. The UK price has not been announced, although going by the dollar amount, it should be less than £10.

The game is an updated version of the team-based shooter, which was first released as a modification to Half-Life 12 years ago. It will feature new maps, characters and weapons, as well as updated versions of classic Counter-Strike content, such as the maps de_dust and de_aztec.

To keep things fresh, there will be new game modes, a matchmaking feature and leader boards, as well as a vast improvement to the graphics.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely mod became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve.

"For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS:GO is being developed by Valve and the Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. Valve began working them because they have been aware of their excellent work for a long while, and they are located just around the corner from their head office. They contributed work to Left 4 Dead 2 and worked on the You Monster! Expansion pack Defence Grid, which included the famous GLaDOS character from the Portal video game series.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801423938-ADNFCR
