RuneScape reaches 200m player accounts

Free-to-play browser-based video game RuneScape has reached an incredible 200 million player accounts.

RuneScape has had 200 million player accounts registered, with 443 billion minutes of game time accrued since it first launched in 2001.

The free-to-play massively multiplayer online role playing game reached the milestone in just 11 years, meaning that if it were a nation it would be the fifth largest in the world.

Players have come from more than 150 countries to play the browser-based game, joining in a medieval quest in the fantasy world of Gielinor.

To celebrate the momentous milestone, developer Jagex has launched an exciting in-game event. Party demons have appeared in the Barbarian Village and gamers are tasked with taking out the resilient demons who have 200 million hit points with the Boogie bow, under the guidance of Presto the mage.

Anyone can equip the Boogie bow, and anyone who succeeds in the task has a party gift waiting for them. There's no need to worry about the demons either, as they can't kill you. It's just a party!

In addition to the in-game event, a website has been launched to celebrate the occasion, showcasing RuneScape's long and enthralling history for nostalgic old timers and intrigued newcomers alike.

"Although RuneScape has achieved so much over the past decade, smashing 200 million accounts is a huge accomplishment for the dedicated development team and is thanks to our awesome community," commented Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard.

"It has been an incredible journey to get to where we are today, and by continuing our tradition of constantly innovating, evolving and lovingly crafting RuneScape, we are certain to continue to break records by creating an online adventure like no other."

He added that the game has experienced a "resurgence in the game's popularity" in the last couple of years, with the number of players continuing to grow year on year.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801412318-ADNFCR
