Call of Duty heads to China

Activision Blizzard targets China with new Call of Duty Online title.

Activision Blizzard has signalled its intention to break the Chinese market with the Call of Duty franchise.

The developer has outlined plans to offer a free-to-play, online version of the title in China.

Tencent Holdings Limited - one of China's internet service providers, has teamed up with Blizzard to help deliver the game to the masses in the Asian nation.

One of the biggest selling points is expected to be the ability to customise playable characters. Specifically, gamers will be able to select their own weapons, characters and equipment.

The more observant reader will realise this means a quite substantial shift in gaming model for the title, with customisation expected to come as an in-game store option, designed with the Chinese audience in mind.

New maps, game modes and a brand new story are also expected to be released.

Tencent will bring its expertise delivering MMO games in China to the collaboration, providing the gaming platform, operational expertise and strong support to developer Blizzard.

Activision's Bobbly Kotick explained: "We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to grow our business and to develop innovative new games.

"We have worked closely with Tencent to create a game with broad appeal for the Chinese market."

"We are thrilled to work with the world’s premiere game developer and publisher to bring this much-awaited title to Chinese game players," said Tencent president Martin Lau.

This announcement comes just a few weeks after developers Infinity Ward announced a new free-to-play game mode for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 title.

The Face Off multiplayer match-up pitches small teams against each other over small maps. Other new features can be accessed with a new, purchasable DLC pack, which adds a cooperative and special ops mission mode.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801401257-ADNFCR
