The Secret World launches today

Hot new MMO The Secret World tries to redefine the genre with a modern-day setting without classes or levels.

The Secret World, a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) role playing game from developers Funcome, has launched today.

It has a unique modern-world setting that is largely unseen in most MMOs, although it does incorporate features from ancient mythologies, urban legends and pop culture that tie it in to a back-story 100 million years in the past.

Players will take on the role of supernatural heroes in a war between good and evil, fighting monsters that pose a great threat to the game world. There is a clear dark fantasy theme, with vampires, demons and zombies all set to feature.

Gamers can join one of three secret societies (the Illuminati, the Dragon or the Templars) who each have the common enemy of the rising darkness, but each are divided by their own desire for power.

The London-based Templars are considered to be zealots who will "burn down a village to kill one demon". New York-based Illuminati are a practical bunch who see the world as a tough place where only the strongest survive. Lastly, the Seoul-based Dragon have a neutral outlook that sits between the two other societies, biding their time as they organise chaos.

Gradually moving up the hierarchy of one of the organisations, players unlock amazing new powers, uniforms and weapons.

Combat will involve gamers fighting for their own society in player versus player battles in legendary locations, including Stonehenge, El Dorado and Shambala, as well as huge scale battles in persistent warzones that involve more than a hundred players fighting at once.

Along with The Secret World's setting, the game is unique in the way there are no levels or classes, with characters improving in an entirely skill-based manner. This system was implemented to avoid the phenomenon of level grinding, which should make the game more accessible to new players.

Despite the lack of classes, characters will be high customisable with a variety of clothing, weapons and supernatural powers.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801399528-ADNFCR
