Will EVE Online enable real product purchases using in-game currency?

CCP Games could extend its use of in-game currency to make real-time purchases for EVE Online.

The publisher behind epic space PC MMO EVE Online is considering making it possible for players to use in-game currency to purchase real-life products.

CCP Games was so impressed with a trial of this concept recently, it is hoping to follow it up, according to MCV UK.

In April, the publisher presented its 360,000-strong international subscriber audience the opportunity to trade in-game wealth for a high-end DirectX 11 video card.

On offer were 100 GeForce GTX 560 video cards, priced at 20 PLEX each.

Speaking to the website, EVE Online senior producer Jon Lander explained: "There's obviously quite an appetite out there
[for] doing this sort of thing.

"We're certainly hoping for EVE merchandise. We need to just look at what the right opportunities are now. We've got lots of people beavering away trying to work out what the right thing to do is."

EVE Online is no stranger to taking a unique approach to gaming.

While it adopts a monthly subscription model similar to that of World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic, there are opportunities for players to enjoy the game for free.

Subscribers can apply for a Pilot License Extension, or PLEX, that adds 30 days of game time to a user's EVE Online account.

So far, EVE Online has released 17 content expansion packs with the latest, Inferno, released on May 22nd.

Developers described the expansion as giving players more control over their battles.

"You wage wars spanning hundreds of conflicts and thousands of participants. Inferno improves your ability to manage these epic clashes with a timeline view showing the course of battle, and a new War Report that details your tactical achievements for all to see," according to CCP.

In addition to a huge graphics overhaul and exciting new features such as character creator and a unified inventory, subscribers were offered new weapons options.

In a bid to improve visuals, CCP made a selection of huge missile launchers available in Inferno, enabling players to inflict awe-inspiring death on their enemies.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801374817-ADNFCR
