Tribes: Ascend releases fourth update

A fourth update has been released for the successful free-to-play shooter Tribes: Ascend.

Only a month after the release of Tribes: Ascend, the game's developer Hi-Rez Studios is set to release the fourth update entitled Staying Alive.

The first-person shooter update focuses on the title's Brute heavy class, adding three new weapons. The Gladiator is a stand-out addition, a grenade launcher that fires projectiles that stick to walls and release multiple shockwaves when they detonate.

A Plasma Cannon is the main secondary weapon added to the game, which is the big brother of the Plasma Gun from a previous update, firing balls of energy that explode upon impact.

There is also a new Survival Pack added that allows gamers to increase their run speed and energy regeneration.

A new feature called Watch Now allows players to watch YouTube videos and e-sports streams from within the game's interface.

On top of the new additions, there will also be an array of adjustments and fixes to balance the game and ensure it plays how the developer intended it.

Tribes: Ascend has reached 1.2 million downloads since its release on April 12th this year. The impressive figure is partly down to the fact the game is free-to-play, but it has also been met with critical acclaim from many major reviewers. This includes an 88/100 from PC Gamer, a 10/10 from EuroGamer and a 9/10 from IGN.

"We’re thrilled that over one million gamers have discovered the fast-paced and skill-based gameplay of Tribes," said Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios chief operating officer.

"It is truly the player support of the title that has driven the population growth and fuels our team to deliver updates."

Tribes: Ascend is the fifth game in the Tribes franchise and the first multiplayer only game.

A sixth title in the series is titled Tribes Universe. It is an upcoming massively multiplayer shooter developed also by Hi-Rez Studios that was first announced at the end of 2010. Development was halted on the title to work on Ascend.

It is expected that Tribes Universe will focus primarily on player versus player combat in large, open maps that fans of the series know well.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801368820-ADNFCR
