Company of Heroes 2 to be set on the eastern front

Company of Heroes 2 will be set during the Eastern Front campaign, as players are tasked with taking on Russia during World War Two, described in a report on the upcoming title in PC Gamer.

Players will be taking control of the Soviets who are battling to repel the Nazi invasion. The setting will no doubt mean that blood stained snow will be a major feature of the game.

It will be more than just a graphical feature, however, with game's developers Relic explaining that it will have a big impact on battlefield gameplay. Whether or not it melts can influence how fast your infantry and tanks move, with the varying depth of snow creating something extra for gamers to think about.

Although whether or not the mechanics of keeping soldiers from freezing to death will be a part of the real-time strategy (RTS) game remains to be seen.

Relic has updated the cover system to be more intuitive and realistic, with infantry capable of jumping over obstacles, while the line of sight system has also been revamped. Now what your soldiers can see defines how the fog of war unveils during play in what the developer calls "True Sight".

Scenery remains widely destructible so tanks can crush barns and telephone poles, and explosives can bring down buildings.

The game's lead designer was quick to tell PC Gamer that the bloodiest battles in World War Two took place on the Eastern Front, with 13 of the 15 biggest battles in the conflict occuring on the opposite side of the continent.

Gamers can expect this level of destruction to be brought to life in Company of Heroes 2, which runs on Relic's Essence 3 engine.

The engine has been developed and enhanced over the last few years. The original Essence was used for the first Company of Heroes before the updated second version was utilised in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II.

Relic has confirmed that the title, which is due for release next year, will feature a multiplayer mode, but details remain scant.

The original Company of Heroes was celebrated as one of the greatest strategy games of all time upon its release in 2006.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801357506-ADNFCR
