Recent speculation suggested that Bethesda Softwork’s sequel to Prey had been canned. However, the company has broken the silence to confirm that the game is still very much in development.

However, it is not all good news for fans of the game as the company has asserted that it will definitely not be out this year, as was planned.

“The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards,” a statement from Bethesda said.

“Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans.”

There is no clarification on what actually went wrong during the title’s development, but it no doubt had some bearing on the murmurs of its cancellation.

Bethesda does confirm that the delay should be good news in the long-run as it gives the company time to perfect the game.

The statement continued: “We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.”

Very little has surfaced from the  game in the last year, but it garnered a great deal of attention due to its open-ended missions and intriguing visual style that PC Gamer describes as a blend of Blade Runner and Mass Effect.

Originally it was thought that the Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media Inc had cancelled the title in order to focus on other games with a more reliable fan base.

The firm cancelled all talks regarding the title at the Game Developer’s Conference at the beginning of March, which fanned the flames of the rumour.

Prey 2 will follow the tale of Killian Samuels, a US Marshal that becomes stranded on an alien world with no memory. Gamers follow him on his quest to discover his identity while he operates as a bounty hunter.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801345998-ADNFCR
