Final details on Phantasy Star Online 2 released

Sega reveals that Phantasy Star Online 2 will be free-to-play.

Sega has revealed the final details for its upcoming game Phantasy Star Online 2, which is due to be released next year.

The big news is that the game will be free for gamers to play and download. It will instead generate revenue through an item system where players have to use cash to buy in-game goods.

This means that although anyone can start playing the game, individuals will have to make frequent micro-transactions if they want to keep pace with fellow gamers.

It is set to be released on both PC and PlayStation Vita, but Sega has also said that it will be released on the smartphone operating systems iOS and Android, according to reports on Andriasang.

Handheld gamers will, however, have to wait. The game will come out this year for PC fans in Japan but the other formats will not see the light of day until 2013. The European release dates have yet to be announced.

The smartphone version will be different to the PC release with simpler character creation and controls, but it will have social game elements. In short, Sega says it will be a more "personal" and "simple" gaming experience.

Smart phone players will be gaming by themselves as well. While the PC and Vita versions will allow for cross-platform play, the smartphone edition will only share data.

Phantasy Star is a role-playing series that first began in 1987 when the original game was released on the Sega Master System.

The games take place across science fantasy universes where the themes of magic and technology are ever present.

Over 25 years the franchise has moved towards massively multiplayer online (MMO) video games, with the first Phantasy Star Online title released on the Dreamcast in 2000.

Phantasy Star Universe was the first of the games to be released on European shoes back in 2006.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801329543-ADNFCR
