Starbreeze to release free-to-play game

The next release by Starbreeze Studios will be a free-to-play title named Cold Mercury.

The Starbreeze Studio development team is set to release a new free-to-play game entitled Cold Mercury.

Not much has been released about the game but the developer's chief executive officer Mikael Nermark assured audiences in an interview with GamesIndustry that the game will remain AAA.

"We are discussing with several leading game publisher on publisher financed games, but we will broaden our product portfolio of games in the new business models and segments that have arisen in the games industry," Mr Nermark added.

"I am convinced that Starbreeze will be successful with the new games."

The company's last release, Syndicate, was an ultra-violent first-person shooter that received mixed reviews from critics and was even refused classification in Australia.

Following the game's release, 25 staff at the firm were relieved of their duties and the future of the company did not look certain.

However, with the move towards a different business model, Starbreeze looks set to bounce back.

The company is also looking to attain a distribution deal for P13, a title that is currently in development with the help of Josef Fares, a Swedish film director.

Starbreeze Studios is a Swedish company based out of Uppsala. It was founded in 1998 as O3 Games before being rebranded in 2002 as Starbreeze Studios in time to release the 3D action game Enclave.

Yet, the firm is best known for its two video games based on the Hollywood film franchise starring Vin Diesel that includes Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick.

The games Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena are based on the latter film. They are both first-person shooters that feature Diesel's likeness and voice in the lead role.

Knights of the Temple: Infernal Crusade, which was released in 2003, and 2007's The Darkness are the only two other video games released by the company.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801326452-ADNFCR
