Nvidia unveils its fastest GPU ever

Nvidia unveils the brand new GeForce GTX 680 GPU.

Graphics card manufacturer Nvidia has unveiled the fastest and most efficient GPU the company has ever manufactured: the GeForce GTX 680 GPU.

The card utilises Kepler, which is expected to be the successor to the current architecture system, Fermi. The company aimed to not only reach speeds unknown before, but also strived to increase power efficiency and improve the richness and smoothness of every frame.

Nvidia responded to criticisms of the GeForce GTX 480, which users said was a great card but was too power hungry. Through Kepler they hope that gamers will get less noise and a card that doesn’t drain the system’s power.

The card boasts 1539 CUBA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores, which is an increase of over a 1,000 when compared to the previous card, the GTX 580, which only had 512.

Memory speeds reach up to 6 Gbps, a higher speed than any GPU in history.

GPU Boost, a tool the card comes with, improves performance by dramatically increasing its clock speed. While another addition to the card is Adaptive VSync, which chooses to turn VSync on or off on-the-go, depending on how your system is coping.

Nvidia claims that the card beats out the AMD Radeon HD7970 to be overall the fastest GPU in the world. This is in regards to performance per watt and DirectX11 tessellation, which Nvidia believes its card is four times faster at than the AMD counterpart.

“The GeForce GTX 680 is quite unlike any flagship graphics card we've ever built. We've built the fastest GPU in the world for many generations now,” said James Wang, the editor-in-chief at

“Gamers told us they want GPUs that are cooler, quieter, and more power efficient.  So we re-designed the architecture to do just that. The GeForce GTX 680 consumes less power than any flagship GPU since the original GeForce 8800 GTX, yet it outperforms every GPU we or anyone else have ever built.”ADNFCR-1220-ID-801324328-ADNFCR
