Warner Bros and Gaikai launch first cloud-based MMOs

The Lord of The Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online are now the first MMOs to be made available to stream via the cloud.

Cloud gaming provider Gaikai has teamed up with Warner Bros to deliver to popular games direct to customers via the cloud.

The Lord of The Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online will now both be streamed from each game's own website.

This means that for the first time ever, massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) can be played directly from the cloud without the need to download or install anything. All players need to do to get access to the content is to complete a simple one-step registration process.

Gaikai executive vice-president Robert Stevenson claims that MMOs have been a "key genre" that his firm has been looking to deliver via the cloud for some time, as it has never been done before.

"We couldn't be more pleased to showcase Gaikai's technology by streaming Dungeons & Dragons Online and The Lord of the Rings Online, which are both fantastic multiplayer gaming experiences with legions of loyal fans," he added.

Gaikai has apparently spent three years building the fastest interactive cloud gaming network in the world, to ensure it is capable of hoisting MMOs of such significant scale without the need for users to install large software packages on their computers.

It also revealed that any web-connected device will be able to use their service, from PCs and laptop to IP-enabled televisions.

The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online are already hugely popular games, having complemented their loyal fan bases with an innovative free-to-play model.

However, Craig Alexander, vice-president of product development at game developer Turbine, believes the cloud solution will bring in even more new players.

"Gaikai's game streaming service will make it easier than ever for new players to start their epic adventures in our immersive online worlds," he said.

"Anyone wishing to try these popular MMOs can now instantly launch the games inside their web browser completely eliminating any download wait times."ADNFCR-1220-ID-801314549-ADNFCR
