Engage with Star Trek Online for free

Star Trek Online has moved to a free-to-play model.

Stardate January 18th 2012: Perfect World Entertainment (PWE) has taken Star Trek Online to the final frontier with the launch of a free-to-play model.

By removing the subscription fee, PWE hopes that any gamers previously unsure about the title will now find that resistance is futile.

Jack Emmert, chief executive officer of the game developer Cryptic Studios, said that everyone involved in the project has been "very excited" since studio bosses said 'make it so' to the free model.

"Updating Star Trek Online to the popular free-to-play model removes those barriers of entry that previously kept fans and casual gamers away," he said.

"Anyone can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost. There's no better way to see how sitting in the captain's chair feels."

Gamers can, effective immediately, download the game without having to subscribe or pay up front for a hard copy of the game.

While most of the features of Star Trek Online will be free, the creation of a virtual store where players can buy add-ons will, PWE hopes, help the game live long and prosper.

Players are able to boldly go anywhere they like in the extensive Star Trek universe, seeking out new life and new civilisations and taking part in epic ground and space missions.

Regular weekly episodes will be introduced throughout the life of the game, with story-based gameplay testing the individual's ability as the captain of the Enterprise.

Gamers can also travel to many of the iconic locations form the popular television and film series, including Starfleet Academy, Deep Space Nine, The First City of Qo'noS and many others.

Experienced players are even allowed to create and build brand new missions and stories using the specialised toolset, in order to share with the entire Star Trek Online community.
