Intel joins ultrabook war with new innovations

Intel is looking to muscle in on the ultrabook sector with a host of innovative new devices.

Processing giant Intel has used the 2012 Consumer Electronic Show to unveil its latest range of gesture-controlled ultrabooks.

Telling guests at the event that more than 75 laptop models will be released this year, Intel confirmed that it will launch its biggest marketing campaign in over a decade to push them in a competitive sector.

The first wave of products will use touchscreen technology, but Mooly Eden, the vice-president and general manager of Intel's PC group, said that ultrabooks will soon be utilising gesture control, which he demonstrated with the use of a hands-free slingshot game.

These devices will also react to tilting movement the way tablets and smartphones can, and as if that wasn't enough, Mr Eden confirmed that the company now has a "strategic alliance" with speech recognition firm Nuance, meaning that the ultrabooks can be voice-activated without the need for a headset or connection to a cloud system.

Further down the line, Intel are even planning to introduce a live translation option to their voice recognition system.

"People want their device to be nice, small, sleek, sexy ... they want to be proud of it," he said.

"There's nothing wrong with loving your computer if it's a great computer."

Another key feature Mr Eden unveiled was the introduction of a new identity protection and anti-theft program.

Intel will utilise the same near-field technology that allows consumers to pay in shops with their smartphones, instead adapting it so that online shoppers can pay by swiping their credit card over the ultrabook.

Devices can even be paired to a specific credit or debit card, so that a thief cannot use a stolen card in this way on a different computer.

This represents Intel's biggest push yet to muscle its way into the mobile device market, as smartphones and tablets largely use the Arm Holdings chips.ADNFCR-1220-ID-801260710-ADNFCR
