You may remember Steve covered that Valve announced that they were going to offer software on Steam (https://www.cclonline.com/article/382/News/NoCat/Steam-to-offer-more-than-just-games/). Well its finally here and available on Steam, it was made public on the 2nd of October but with an limited amount of software on store itself (at time of writing there was only 7 software items available) it may take a while to assess whether this offering is a success or not.
Valve’s official statement about the software store stated that:
“Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.”
To me it looks like Steam have been working closely with a few chosen software houses to try and make the software and integrated and appealing to customers as it can be as most of the offerings on the steam store are offered on other websites for download.
I also noticed that all of the software has something to do with games or benchmarking it would be nice to see other offerings on their such as backup software or other non-gaming software. At the time of writing Steam is offering 10% discount on everything on the Software store so if you fancy 3DMark 11 now is the time to buy.
