Toshiba Hybrid Drive
Toshiba has announced a new ‘hybrid’ drive designed to combine the capacity of a platter based hard disk with the performance of a solid state drive. The plan put forward by Toshiba will see release later this year. Toshiba are not the first to attempt this as Seagate also have a similar product on the market, but at least this puts some competition into this market.
The new drives will come in 2 sizes the 1TB MQ01ABD100H and the 750GB MQ01ABD075H, they both come with 8GB NAND flash memory as a cache memory to support high speed data throughput and also feature SATA 3 (6gbps). According the Toshiba the new Hybrid Drive reduces application boot times by about 40%.
The drives are in the 2.5 inch variety and to be more precise 9.5mm deep, so might not fit in the thinnest of notebooks.
The Toshiba drives also feature a self-learning algorithm which automatically copies frequently accessed data to the 8Gb solid state drive. The more frequently the data is accessed, the more likely it is to stay on the solid state. As a result, the true performance of the drive may not be obvious until it has been in regular use a week or so.
