What are USB Condoms ?

A surprising product, to help prevent data theft

As their tag line goes, have you ever plugged your phone into a PC to charge and thought "Gee who could be stealing my data?" Worry no more, as a website called int3.cc has you covered with the USB Condom.

The USB Condom, is a product designed to go between your charge cable and the PC in question, and it does something extremely simple. It strips out the data connection between the PC and your device, meaning that only power is sent across. This means that your device will only charge when plugged into it.

Whilst I personally have not heard much about so called "juice jacking", which is what this device is designed to prevent, a quick search on the topic does provide lots of information regarding the potential security issues arising from it.

Stock currently of the USB Condom is sold out, but it will soon be back, with the site saying that stock should be available from the beginning of this week.

But enough from us, here's what int3.cc have to say.

Have you ever plugged your phone into a strange USB port because you really needed a charge and thought: "Gee who could be stealing my data?". We all have needs and sometimes you just need to charge your phone. "Any port in a storm." as the saying goes. Well now you can be a bit safer. "USB Condoms" prevent accidental data exchange when your device is plugged in to another device with a USB cable. USB Condoms achieve this by cutting off the data pins in the USB cable and allowing only the power pins to connect through. Thus, these "USB Condoms" prevent attacks like "juice jacking".

Use USB-Condoms to:

* Charge your phone on your work computer without worrying...

* Use charging stations in public without worrying...

If you're going to run around plugging your phone into strange USB ports, at least be safe about it. ;-)
