Google today has announced and released (in the US at least) a new TV streaming dongle called the Chromecast.

The device is simple in its operation, you plug it into a spare HDMI port on your TV, Power it by a usb cable then connect it to your in-house wireless connection, it then allows you to stream HDTV movies, TV shows, music, and more from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, and Chrome itself, with more streaming services planned in the future due to the ability of the stick to keep updating the built in firmware.

The device is special in that you utilise your Android or iOS device as a sort of remote control telling the Chromecast what to stream and rather than killing your phone battery by streaming it from the mobile phone, the device uses your wireless network to then stream the files.

The device has hit shelves already in the states, at a price of $35 (~£23) but no information is yet known about when the unit may come to the UK or any other parts of the world.
