In an official response from The White House, the 27,184 strong petition to have the US build the Death Star, it wasn't great news for the signatories. The petition urged the administration to "secure resources and funding and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016".
The response was an unsurprising "no" but it was delivered with utter class. The White House stated three reasons that it wasn't committed to the project:
1) The total cost is estimated at $850,000,000,000,000,000 which is a "Quadrillion". I guess we can't rely on the banks any more.
2) The administration doesn't believe that "blowing up planets" is a good thing.
3) Why would the Administration spend so much on a Death Star when it can be destroyed by a single star ship.
The response goes on to suggest that whilst there won't be a Death Star anytime soon, there is the International Space Station complete with its robotic assistants, robots on Mars and a probe in development that will head out to the Sun's exterior layers.
