Q: This software appears to match our needs, however can we use a WHS license in a commercial environment at one of our datacentres?
Answer by CCL on 7th May 2012
The Microsoft FAQ for Home Server states: Windows Home Server is a solution that meets the needs of Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) businesses. Windows Home Server is an affordable way to organize and safeguard important work documents. Automatic back up and complete computer recovery, the ease of adding additional storage space, and the ability to remotely access important files are just a few of the ways that Windows Home Server will help users run their businesses more efficiently. For more sophisticated small businesses that plan on growing, Windows Small Business Server 2008 adds additional business functionality and scales well beyond 10 users. If there would be more than 10 users connecting, this license would not be suitable. -Danlevan

Q: Sorry guys, meant to say what will I need to buy to start from scratch - will a desktop/tower with minimum system requirements do the job? Can you recommend anything from yourselves which won't break the bank!! Regards, Chris
Answer by CCL on 19th March 2012
Yes pretty much anything that meets the minimum spec will do the job. If you wish to purchase a new system then i would recommend one of the HP proLiant servers CCL Code: SRV0280 as they currently (19/03/2012) have a £100 cashback offer making them a very good deal.

Q: What hardware will I need to use/run this please? Is it easy for someone with small amount of computer knowledge to install/run?
Answer by CCL on 19th March 2012
Minimum system requirements for this product are: CPU - 1.3 GHz x86-64 Dual Core or 1.4 GHz x86-64 Single Core, RAM - 2 GB (8 GB Maximum), Hard disk space - 160 GB The installation is very similar to windows and there is a lot of support available on the web for this software should you get stuck.

Q: I have a HP EX475 MediaSmart Server with Windows Homer Server power pack 3 installed on it. How do I check / know if it is compatible with 64bit?
Answer by CCL on 6th August 2011
All that is required is to make sure the processor is 64bit compatible, from a quick look online it appears that the Sempron based processor that is used in the EX475 is 64bit compatible, however I would recommend checking with the manufacturer of the device for official support.

Q: Can I install WHS 2011 as a VM on an ESX4i (64-bit) server?
Answer by Website User on 22nd July 2011
I would assume WHS2011 would work as it is based on 2008 R2, best to confirm with Microsoft though I guess. Its so cheap taking a risk would not be that disastrous.
2 customers found this answer helpful.
Answer by Website User on 25th July 2011
You can install it as VM but I am not sure what a ESX4i server is.

Answer by Website User on 27th September 2011
Yes you can, but you will have to give it about 180gb, even though it only needs about 60 for the OS

Q: I've got WHS 2008 installed. Can I update this installation or would I have to start again from scratch?
Answer by Website User on 20th July 2011
This is a 64 bit operating system based on Server 2008 when the previous version is 32 bit based on Server 2003 so you cannot upgrade from the old version.

Q: Can this product be used as a stand-alone Operating System and if so, is it like the Windows 7 interface?
Answer by Website User on 19th July 2011
Windows Home Server is a server OS, it does have an interface but is not intended to be used like a desktop OS so may lack some key functionality. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/default.mspx

Answer by Website User on 18th July 2011
I have installed WHS2011 on my HP Micoserver. The server support 64bit and VT so it would also run VMWare ESXi 4.1 as well!!!! I have also setup the RAID and it is support in WHS2011.

Q: will i need a fixed ip address to use the remote access facility
Answer by CCL on 18th July 2011
You will need to configure a fixed IP address on the system/server you install this onto in order to use the remote access facility.
0 customers found this answer helpful.
Answer by Website User on 18th July 2011
You will need a static IP address on your INTERNAL network and your router set to forward traffic to it for several ports. You do not require a static EXTERNAL address as the system uses dynamic DNS update when you register for a free .homeserver.com domain name which the wizard will talk you through. This just needs your Windows Live ID. Hope this helps, John

Answer by Website User on 18th July 2011
I use the WHS (old version) remote access with a standard BT Internet package which does not give me a fixed IP. I think that there is a chance that you IP address could potentially change if you turned your router off for a while but generally if you stay connected, it will stay the same. I access my server remotely occasionally (I have a homeserver.com domain - which I am fairly certain is free) and it works most of the time. A good place to get info is the wegotserved forums - those guys are the real experts.

Answer by Website User on 18th July 2011
I assume its the same as the older version. Microsoft provide a domain in the form your_domain.homeserver.com so it doesn't matter if the IP changes.
0 customers found this answer helpful.
Answer by Website User on 19th July 2011
No. It works perfectly well with a DHCP address from an ISP. You'll need to register a domain through the management console for WHS, but it's fairly simple to do and is fully automated.

Q: I am interested in home server as an RD gateway on port 443. This port is not blocked by most company networks so I would be able to RD onto my Windows 2007 PC at home. I can currently RD in from open internet since my router is on a dynamic dns provider but I need an RD gateway to be able to get in from work. Does Home Server support RD gateway on port 443?
Answer by CCL on 30th June 2011
WHS 2011 does indeed support TS/RD Gateway services on port 443 as default as far as I'm aware.
