Notebooks are for those of you who don't want to be tied down to a particular place and work on a desktop PC. You open your laptop and away you go! Before you do, let us give you some things to consider:
You should buy a laptop if your main priorities are:-
- Portability - Modern notebooks are light, compact and fairly robust. Even the latest small form factor PC's can't compete with the mobility of a notebook. Modern batteries will keep you running for a few hours if you're not near a mains socket. For computing on the move, notebooks have it sewn up.
- Convenience - Everything is in one neat little box with no wires dangling about all over the place. If you like to surf the net or finish that spreadsheet whilst putting your feet up & relaxing on the sofa then you need a laptop - no question.
- Coolness - Lets face it, notebooks such as Toshiba or the Sony Vaio are cool. They look cool. They're cool to use and they're far less boring than the average desktop box. Buy a decent notebook and your mates will want to see it. You'll never regret it because they work and they're cool. Buy a desktop and your mum will think it's nice and probably very useful.....

Bluetooth - An industrial standard for low power, short range, radio communication between devices. Bluetooth is used to allow mobile phones, computers, PDAs and the like to communicate across short distances. HDD - Hard Disk Drive. Mass storage device with fixed capacity. Also referred to simply as HD. IDE - Integrated Drive Electronics. Common and cheap form of disk interface. Superseded by EIDE. Also sometimes referred to as Parallel ATA Laptop - A portable computer small enough to rest on a user's lap, also known as a notebook computer. OS - Operating System. For example Unix, Linux, Windows. The most important program that runs on a computer. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen and keeping track of files. RAM - Random Access Memory. Fast, semi-conductor based memory in a computer. It is called "Random Access" because the computer can access any part of the memory directly. WiFi - A collective name for wireless Ethernet using 802.11x standards with x denoting the various alternatives such as a, b, g and n. 802.11n uses MiMo - multiple-input multiple-output - which allows for longer range and better quality signalling.
