| Graphics Card Glossary |
AGP - Advanced Graphics Port. Graphics card interface for high performance graphics (faster than PCI). Driver Software - Software used to make computer peripherals function. Driver software is written specifically for the device to allow it to work with a particular operating system of the computer. If you upgrade your computer operating system, such as moving from Windows XP to Vista you will need to update your drivers. D-SUB - This connector carries the analogue video signals to a monitor, and usually consists of 15 pins that correspond to a different wire or signal. Head on, the ‘D’-shaped raised shield gives it it’s name. Also known as a DB15 cable. DVI - Digital Visual Interface. An interface between a PC graphics card and a monitor (or other display device) that is completely digital. Being completely digital there is no digital to analogue conversion involved so there is no signal loss. PCI - Peripheral Computer Interface. A 32 or 64 bit bus architecture described by the PCI Local Bus Specification. PCI Express - PCI Express is the latest standard for expansion cards and will come in several different versions. The first types to appear are x16 and x1 lanes, with x4 and x8 versions to follow. The x16 lane is reserved for graphics (replacing AGP slots). S-Video - Super-Video. This is a high quality method of transporting video accomplished by keeping colour and light information separate. This results in less colour bleeding and a generally better quality image the using composite. Not as good as component video |
