Netbook computers are popular because of their practicality and variety of uses, Dell states.
Ellen Murphy, PR manager of the company, suggests the technology behind netbooks already existed before the recession took effect, and so their success is a result of good timing.
She also states that they are not intended to replace the higher-end notebook model.
"A lot of consumers are buying what they can afford and what suits their needs," Ms Murphy added.
A recent article in the Guardian suggested that the success of netbooks may face a challenge in the future with the introduction of a new, ultra-slim notebook PC with a long battery life.
The article predicted that sales of notebooks and netbooks will get closer this year than ever before.
Online dictionary for words relating to computer and internet technology, Webopedia, describes notebooks as being extremely lightweight computers that usually weigh less than six pounds. A netbook weights less than three pounds.
