Semiconductor manufacturer Intel has developed what it claims is the fastest memory card technology in the world.
Read speeds of up to 200 megabytes per second and corresponding write speeds of 100 megabytes per second may be achieved by the new standard.
This represents a rate about five times that of memory cards already on the market, Intel says.
Or by incorporating the technology into the next generation of hybrid hard drives, the faster read-write capabilities of solid-state storage may also be harnessed.
This could see hard drives which operate at two to three times the speed of existing devices.
Director of marketing Pete Hazen comments that the new technology enables products to "take advantage of high-performance system interfaces including pci-e and upcoming standards such as USB 3.0".
Intel recently revealed that its drive towards eco-awareness has resulted in it becoming the single largest purchaser of green energy in the US.
