Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new hard disk drive (HDD), offering the world's highest recording density.
The Samsung F1 RAID Class 3.5-inch SATA HDD runs at 7,200rpm, has a capacity of one terabyte and has been designed and manufactured for storage and video surveillance.
It can also run demanding applications such as software development, call centre systems, email servers and databases.
With low power consumption as a result of using just three platters, the new Spinpoint F1R HDD is the coolest operating 1TB drive in its class, designed to meet high quality standards and a dramatic increase in digital content.
John Rydning, IDC research manager for hard disk drives, commented: "Samsung's new F1R with 1TB of capacity on three platters offers enterprise customers an attractive combination of capacity and features for this growing segment."
The South Korean electronics giant points out that demand for storage capacity is rocketing at an annual rate of almost 60 per cent, with high capacity disk drives being used by data centres to service demand.
Samsung rival Toshiba has created a new range of five HDDs for consumer electronic and PC applications, including two single-platter 60GB 1.8-inch HDDs.
