Floppy Disk Drives

Floppy disks were originally introduced in 1971 and were originally called flexible magnetic disks. They revolutionised computer disk storage for personal computers and became essential in all computers during the 1980s and 1990s to install software, transfer data and create backups. The advent of other portable storage options like memory cards, USB storage devices, CD and DVDs with the ability to store the same amount of data as thousands of floppy disks. This has relegated floppy disks to be used for niche uses mainly in system administration environments.
