BitDefender has released a free piece of software which could help people's PCs run more smoothly.
Specifically designed for use with Windows machines, BitDefender Security Scan is able to assess a computer and identify security threats and registry errors that may be slowing processes down.
It can be used alongside existing security software packages, offering a complementary added layer of protection for viruses, trojans and malware.
Quickscan technology allows users to locate and remove malware infections in less than a minute due to 'in-the-cloud' functionality, without the need for regular virus definition updates.
Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender chief technology officer, said: "With the use of our cloud malware scanning technology and the ability to advise on how to improve computer performance, we're confident that Security Scan will be a really useful product for many users."
Other features include registry tuning, scheduled scanning and antivirus spot checks. The application is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7.
